Akemashite Omedetou! Or Happy New Year everyone! Who doesn’t love a new year? It’s a chance to begin again or to be better than the previous year. Whatever phase you are at right now in your life, I’m sure knowing that it’s another new year feels somehow like a good refresher!

So as you already know, my New Year is absolutely (and I should say literally) a New Year -new country, new home, new family and so that means a new way to celebrate this holiday as well.

So what do we have here? It’s a box called Osechi (in Japanese). It’s specifically made and prepared only for the New Year holiday. Some traditional Osechis are specially home made however recently, people prefer to buy them online or in supermarkets since it usually takes time and effort to prepare.

As for our own set of Osechi, my husband pre-ordered it December last year and received it on New year’s Eve. It usually comes in different sizes and number of layers as well.

Speaking about the dishes, the key perhaps to Japanese food are color, detail and arrangement. They give such a good attention to these three that made each recipe stand out. Beyond what we know is the meaning and symbol to each dish and how it relates to good luck and fortune for the new year (but I may not go down to that now).

Ours came in a three layered box. Now I am no expert so I couldn’t really tell the most intricate detail with these food. But look at just how they were neatly arranged? Also, it’s best paired with a Miso Soup which you can practically make up your own.

As we feast together the Osechi with my husband, we also welcomed the New year with heartfelt prayers and with full gratitude to the new life we’re about to share.
